Mardi Gras at the Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen 2022

The Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen meets the physical and spiritual needs of the homeless and under-privileged in the Huntsville and Madison County areas. They provide two meals a day, Tuesday through Friday. They provide a Sunday Church Service with brunch following.
On this day, I brought ten Randazzo’s King Cakes from New Orleans. I baked five pans of cornbread in a black iron skillet. All of the decorations, tablecloths, balloons, beads and doubloons to bring Mardi Gras festivities to the patrons were a donation. We had Cajun music playing in the background!
At the Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen, the patrons are seated at tables and the staff brings the food to them, like in a restaurant. We served them red beans and sausage over rice with cornbread.
The fun really began when it was time to serve the King Cake slices!! You see I made up 10 Mardi Gras Swag Bags so that whomever received the slice with the baby inside would receive one of the bags!! The joy in their faces was priceless.
Julianne is a volunteer and will be going to New Orleans for the next two weeks. She will be staying near the Randazzo's Bakery in Slidell. She was so excited and wanted this photo to show them! That is the 7 boxes left of the 10 shipped in for this event!
They were so appreciated as this was something new and fun!! As we were cleaning up, several of them took the time to say thank you and how much they appreciated everything!! I was very humbled serving them both lunch and the king cake! What an awesome experience.
